Another UK Airline Opens Recruitment for First Officers Across Both Airbus and Boeing Fleets for the First Time since 2020

Virgin Atlantic has opened up recruitment for First Officers across both Airbus and Boeing fleets for the first time since 2020.

The demand for First Officers comes as Virgin Atlantic increases capacity across its network.  New flying includes its first ever service to Austin, Texas which launched in May 2022,  a new route to Tampa, Florida which starts on 3rd November alongside a seasonal service to Cape Town, South Africa, which begins on 5th November.

Virgin Atlantic has one of the youngest, cleanest, and most technologically advanced twin-engine wide-body fleet of any airline. This includes the A350-1000 aircraft, Boeing 787 Dreamliners and also Virgin Atlantic’s newest aircraft,  the A330-900 NEO, which will take to the skies in October 2022 with a redesigned Upper Class cabin. The airline will take delivery of three A330-900 NEO aircraft in 2022 with the remaining 13 deliveries following between 2023 and 2026.

Following the impact of the pandemic, Virgin Atlantic was the first airline to create a holding pool to welcome back pilots and cabin crew when increased flying allowed. All the hold pool  pilots who passed interview have re-joined or have confirmed start dates and Virgin Atlantic is now ready to restart external recruitment. The airline anticipates it will need 100 additional pilots by Summer 2023 with a further 60 by Summer 2024 and a further 40 by Summer 2025.

Estelle Hollingsworth, Chief People Officer, at Virgin Atlantic commented:

Our pilots head up our flying operation every day, making the difference that our customers see and feel when they fly Virgin Atlantic. They give our customers an exceptional journey, delivering consistent operational excellence in the sky whilst maintaining our highest safety standards.

“At Virgin Atlantic, our purpose is to inspire everyone to take on the world, championing inclusivity,  and our challenger spirit. Ensuring our Pilot community is made up of diverse backgrounds, remains a core priority for us and we welcome anyone with a genuine passion for aviation to apply for these exciting positions.”

Virgin Atlantic firmly believes that anyone can take on the world and as an equal opportunity employer, is committed to becoming a more diverse workplace. This round of pilot recruitment follows cabin crew recruitment earlier in the year which saw a record number of applications – 10,000 applicants for 800 roles – in particular from ethnically diverse backgrounds, alongside those who felt comfortable to disclose disabilities.  In June 2022, in line with its focus on inclusion and individuality, the airline relaxed its tattoo policy for all its uniformed staff including pilots, meaning visible tattoos no longer need to be hidden, encouraging every person to be truly themselves.

Background

Virgin Atlantic is sufficiently resourced for its operations and is not suffering the disruption that other airlines have experienced. The airline introduced a holding pool scheme during the 2020 restructuring, which meant it was able to bring back more than 1000 cabin crew and pilots as demand returned, reducing the need for new airside passes to be processed. Virgin Atlantic has also recruited and trained a significant number of new employees. Since the start of 2022, it has onboarded 800 new cabin crew and 45 new pilots. 10,000 applicants applied for those crew roles, which shows there are no issues attracting talent, and  saw record applications from candidates with ethnically diverse backgrounds, alongside those comfortable to disclose disabilities.

Virgin Atlantic is looking for pilots to become First Officers, who have one of the following current type ratings:

  • Airbus A319/320/321/330/350
  • Boeing 737/747/757/767/777/787

Candidates must have a minimum experience of 1,500 hours of total flying time on the above with at least 500 hours on the current type. (Hours spent solely as a cruise pilot are not included).

You also need the following:

  • Flown the aircraft type within the last 6 months
  • Achieved 200 flying hours in the last 12 months
  • Hold a current UK Class one Medical and a full EASA ATPL licence (UK issue) at the date of joining.
  • The ability to demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English (certified as ICAO level 6 English Proficiency when applying)

Ryanair Reaches Agreements With Spanish And French Pilots On Pay Restoration

Ryanair has welcomed the ballot approval by its Spanish based pilots on post-Covid pay restoration, which follows the recent acceptance by its French based pilots of a similar agreement. These agreements with the SEPLA (Spain) and SNPL (France) unions deliver accelerated pay restoration and future improvements to pay in each year up to March 2027.

This year the airline will grow to 115% of its pre-Covid capacity and is prioritising the early restoration of pay for its people through these re-negotiated agreements to keep jobs secure and to have a foundation for growth. These new accelerated deals also provide for pay enhancements and other benefits beyond full restoration of pay for Ryanair’s Spanish and French based Pilots over 5 years to March 2027.

Ryanair’s People Director, Darrell Hughes said: “We welcome these long-term agreements which run until 2027 and will deliver numerous improvements for our Pilots based in Spain and France. While the recovery from the impact of the pandemic is still ongoing and our industry faces significant challenges, this long-term agreement delivers stability, accelerated pay restoration, future pay increases and other benefit improvements for pilots. While all of our pilots across our European network are covered by 2020 Emergency Agreements, we continue to work with our pilots and their unions on new deals, similar to those concluded with SEPLA and SNPL, and have now successfully re-negotiated accelerated pay restoration and improved long-term agreements with over 85% of our pilots.

Hawaiian Airline Increases Incentives to Recruit Pilots as Demand Recovery Quicker than Expected

Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii’s largest airline, is seeking pilots as it copes up with the increased demand and gets back on pre pandemic levels. The airline is offering higher pay and a US$10,000 sign on bonus for pilots as part of its latest recruitment drive as it mentions that the state is not training as many pilots as required by the industry.

“People were surprised by how quickly air traffic rebounded after some of the Covid numbers dropped and people started choosing to go to Hawaii. It’s going to take a lot of husting from our local airlines to have a sufficient number of pilots this season,” said Peter Forman, aviation expert, as cited by KITV4. “The state of Hawaii is not training nearly as many pilots as before and that’s the best source for pilots at Hawaiian Airlines because those pilots want to live on Hawaii. The best option is to focus on people who grew up in Hawaii.”

US Startup Airline Offering US$250,000 Per Year To Ensure Pilot Recruitment Drive Success

Connect Airlines announced the launch of its Smart Start Captain recruitment program that will offer up to thirty highly qualified direct entry US Captains an industry leading, pay-protected salary of more than a quarter million dollars per year, plus sought-after quality of life benefits to join the USA’s newest regional airline that is launching scheduled service on Dash 8 aircraft.

“We recognize the hiring challenges the industry is facing and are taking these unprecedented steps to meet the business objectives of our startup airline while offering pilots economic security and quality of life opportunities,” said John Thomas, CEO, Connect Airlines. “Creating a new airline in a challenging market means we have to do things differently and smarter than others.”

Connect is recruiting US Captains who have a minimum of 2500 hours total time that includes 1000 hours of part 121 or part 135 flying time. Pilots with this level of experience have been through the industry’s ebbs and flow and are looking for a better work life balance. With its regional service and aircraft returning to their home base each day, Connect will offer its Captains an opportunity to set smarter schedules to optimize their duty time and home life.

“We are looking for Captains that see the opportunity in building a new airline and in participating directly in how that airline works and grows,” said David Marcontell, Chief Operating Officer, Connect Airlines. “There is a huge benefit in collaborating with our pilots to build a smarter airline and we are backing that up with a compensation package that is considerably higher than any other Regional in the USA and highly competitive with Low Cost Carriers (LCC) as well.

” Connect is now working closely with US and Canadian regulators towards successful completion of its certification process before beginning scheduled service between Toronto’s Billy Bishop’s (YTZ) convenient downtown airport and Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD) and Philadelphia (PHL) airports. Last week the US Department of Transportation (DOT) issued Connect its certificate of convenience and necessity and tentatively approved Connect’s certificate authorizing foreign scheduled air transportation.

Connect’s aircraft will generate up to 40% less carbon emissions than the existing US regional jets they replace while at the same time providing a superior passenger experience. Connect also plans to be the first zero-emission passenger airline in the US through its recently announced order with Universal Hydrogen for hydrogen-powered aircraft beginning in 2025.

“By flying Turboprops, we are offering potential Captains an opportunity to fly a high-performance aircraft while also playing a leading role in dramatically reducing aviation’s carbon footprint and helping the US reach its climate goals,” said Marcontell. “We look forward to welcoming our new class of smarter aviators.”
