US Major Airline to Suspend Flights to Hawaii for Almost Six Months Due to Crew Shortage

In response to the looming pilot shortage, Alaska Airlines announced it will suspend flights to Honolulu, Hawaii for almost six months starting in June running into November of this year. Nevertheless, the airline assured it will resume flights by November as “we continue to adjust our operating schedule to meet our staffing levels,” said Alaska Airlines Public Affairs Manager Tim Thompson in a statement to Alaska’s News Service.

Airlines UK Chief: Airline Sector has a Serious Problem with Recruitment

Airlines UK (Trade Union of Airlines in the United Kingdom) Chief, Tim Alderslade, during a panel debate at Advantage Travel Partnership’s conference in Madeira, said that the airline sector has ‘serious problem’ trying to recruit more staff. Alderslade says that labor is a big issue as UK airlines tries to cope with the increasing demand.

“There’s a huge number of challenges and labour will be a real issue moving forward, and not just in the short term. It’s going to be a difficult few months as the labour just isn’t there, and it will take a number of years to get back to where we were,” said Alderslade.

Alderslade emphasized, referring to the recruitment aspect, that it’s going to be a “really difficult few years ahead” if the sector doesn’t get it right.

“There’s a big conversation going on at the moment with government on how we can get people who want to come into the industry quicker,” added Alderslade.

French Airline Expands Pilot Hiring Due to Business Picking Up Faster Than Expected

“We need pilots because our business is picking up faster than we expected a year ago,” says Didier Nicolini, Air France SVP Pilot’s Labour Relations.

Air France continues to hire pilots and is nearing a total of 280 by this summer. In addition, the airline plans to add another 100 pilots by the end of the year. Air France started hiring pilots since autumn of 2021.
