Fiji Airways Commences US$30 Million Development of Training Academy and Full Flight Simulator Training Center
Fiji’s National Airline has embarked on a $FJ67 million-dollar development to enhance the Fiji Airways Aviation Academy (FJAA) based in Namaka, Nadi. This Phase II (a) investment will see the addition of;
- Airbus A350 full flight simulator
- ATR-600 full flight simulator
- Boeing 737 MAX flight training devices
- Airbus A330 flight training devices
The Academy buildings will be expanded with the addition of a fourth simulator bay and repurposing of some existing training rooms to create a dedicated facility for fixed base training devices.
“This is a significant step in the growth of FJAA, enhancing the Academy’s flight crew training facilities and enabling us to conduct all of Fiji Airways and Fiji Link pilot training in-house, resulting in improved pilot productivity and more cost savings in flight crew training.
By July 2024, the academy will house four full flight simulators covering all of Fiji Airways fleet types, and four fixed base synthetic training devices,” said company Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Andre Viljoen.
All technical assessment and training in-house from initial assessment of potential cadets through to type rating and recurrent training of pilots will then be conducted in-house.
A following Phase II (b) development currently in planning for 2025 will include dedicated, fully equipped cabin crew safety and service training facilities, with the capability to perform all aspects of this training, additional office accommodation for staff based at the Academy, uniform boutique, grooming salon, demonstration flight kitchen, and cafeteria facilities.
Once these enhancements are complete, the Academy will become a fully-fledged aviation training facility with a range of state-of-the-art equipment for pilot, engineer and cabin crew training, and will offer a range of other aviation related training to Fiji Airways staff and third parties.
“FJAA has already resulted in the National Airline saving $FJ19 million annually. We no longer have to send our pilots overseas for long periods of time to undergo training and re-certification. With these new investments, our savings will only improve,” added Mr Viljoen.
He adds that Fiji Airways plans to actively market FJAA to other airlines as the preferred commercial aviation training destination in the Pacific, competing for a share of a vibrant airline training market.
A further Phase III development planned for 2026 will add accommodation for visiting airline crews and other overseas delegates, a restaurant, lap pool, and gymnasium.

Global Flight Training Group, Airways Aviation, Shares Remarkable Journey of Students to the Taiwanese Airline
Global flight training group Airways Aviation, which operates pilot training academies across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceanic region, shared through its Australian base the inspiring journey of two exceptional individuals, Tiger and Jonathan, who, despite the turbulent times in the aviation industry, soared to new heights and realized their dreams with Taiwanese airline Starlux Airlines.
“In the world of aviation, Starlux Airlines is a name synonymous with luxury, innovation, and quality. Founded by the distinguished K.W. Chang, a former chairman and 777 pilot with EVA Air, Starlux Airlines set out to redefine the flying experience. With a fleet boasting the latest Airbus models, including the A320neo, A330neo, and A350-900, it was no small feat for Airways Aviation’s graduates, Tiger (Po Yu Lai) and Jonathan (Chia-Yang Hsu), to secure positions as first officers with this prestigious airline.
“I’m truly honored and excited about my recent appointment with Starlux. Following my training at Airways Aviation, I continued to expand my knowledge and skills which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the aviation industry and further hone my expertise. I am grateful for all the experiences that have brought me to this point and for the opportunities that lie ahead with Starlux,” former Airways Aviation student, Tiger explains of his recent selection.
Tiger and Jonathan embarked on their aviation journeys in2017 with aspirations of becoming pilots. They chose Airways Aviation in partnership with Southern Cross University as the launchpad for their careers. Both students completed their Bachelor of Business with Southern Cross University and earned their Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence) and Instrument Rating with Airways Aviation back in 2020. Upon graduating, the aviation industry faced unprecedented challenges due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The world watched as aviation grappled with uncertainty and downturns. Finding a job in the aviation sector during these trying times was an uphill battle. But Tiger and Jonathan didn’t give up. They continued to work hard, improving their skills and knowledge while keeping their dream alive.
Three years later, Tiger and Jonathan finally received the news they had been waiting for. They had not only passed but excelled in the rigorous interview process, securing their positions as first officers with Starlux Airlines. They are about to embark on an exciting career, flying some of the most beautiful and cutting-edge aircraft in the world.” shared Janet D, CEO of Airways Aviation Australia.

Flight Simulator Manufacturer, ALSIM, Celebrates 30th Anniversary
France headquartered ALSIM proudly celebrates its remarkable 30-year journey. This leading French-based manufacturer has established itself as a prime developer and manufacturer of FAA and EASA certified FNPTII, FNPTII MCC, and AATD flight simulators. Over those three decades it has built up a global reach extending to more than 400 customers and has already delivered more than 450 certified simulators across 60 countries.
The journey began in 1994 with a visionary concept of creating and offering state-of-the-art flight training devices at affordable prices. The objective was clear; to develop a versatile simulator that could be utilized for various aircraft types, while keeping costs within reach of even the smallest flight schools. This idea led to a continuous stream of innovative products, beginning with the introduction of TFT screens on simulators in 1997—an industry first pioneered by ALSIM.
Recognizing the growing importance of multi-crew cooperation (MCC) in the airline industry towards the end of the last century, ALSIM responded by developing a simulator exclusively designed to enhance pilot confidence and competence in a multi-crew working environment. In 1999 the company achieved a milestone with the sale of its first MCC trainer, laying the foundation for future innovations.
In the early 2000s, Diamond Aircraft emerged as a leading innovative player in the aviation training market. ALSIM promptly responded and, working closely with the OEM, successfully launched the AL42 in 2005—a faithful replica of the Diamond DA42 twin-engine training aircraft. Dedicated to their continuous quest for innovation and improvement, the ALSIM research and development team then conceived and manufactured an entirely new device which can replicate ten different aircraft models, thereby providing training capabilities from PPL up to MCC/JOC. Thus, the remarkable ALX was born and introduced in 2008.
In early 2016, ALSIM revisited its founding principle of creating cost-effective, versatile flight training devices, resulting in the creation of the AL250—a compact simulator adaptable for SEP/MEP training on the PPL, CPL, and IR/ME levels. Just a year later, in 2017, ALSIM unveiled their second type-specific device for a classic training aircraft, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk.
Innovation is very strongly embedded in the DNA, and in 2020 further evidence of that was shown when ALSIM was proudly presented their latest achievements – “The Airliner” and the brand-new ALSR20—an exact replica of the Cirrus SR20 aircraft. “The Airliner” is a multi-purpose hybrid (B737/A320) simulator, designed to cater to the demands of advanced MCC and APS MCC training as delivered by medium to large ATOs. A partnership with Cirrus Aircraft also ensures that the ALSR20 matches the ongoing evolution of the aircraft.
Jean-Paul Monnin, President and CEO of ALSIM declares: “We are delighted to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Over the years, ALSIM has remained committed to providing cutting-edge flight simulators that enhance pilot training across the globe. We are grateful for the continued trust and support from our customers and partners.”
