Portugal-based Flight School Welcomes 12 New Aspiring Pilots to December 2024 Intake

International Flight Academy (IFA) has welcomed a new cohort of 12 aspiring pilots into its comprehensive Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) training program.

In 2024 International Flight Academy marked a historic milestone in aviation by launching the Pipistrel VELIS ELECTRO, the first 100% electric aircraft in Portugal. This innovative achievement sets a new standard for eco-friendly aviation training in the country.

  • The Velis Electro is powered by two water-cooled lithium batteries, providing a flight autonomy of 50 minutes plus reserves.
  • IFA has invested over €400,000 in Viseu, contributing indirectly an estimated €1.5 million to the local economy since its establishment in 2019.
  • IFA’s fleet now includes two Velis Electro aircraft, reinforcing their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and noise.
  • The academy plans to expand by attracting more Portuguese and international students, with current enrollments from 11 different nationalities.

The role focuses on ensuring regulatory compliance, optimizing training resources, and maintaining high standards of aviation education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report to the Accountable Manager on training resources and compliance with EASA, DGAC, and internal standards
  • Define instructor and resource requirements in collaboration with the CFI and CTKI
  • Monitor trainee progress and manage regulatory and financial aspects of student files
  • Ensure all training programs comply with EASA regulations and industry standards
  • Design and update training curricula to meet regulatory and market needs
  • Oversee instructor recruitment, training, and performance evaluation
  • Maintain quality assurance processes and promote a strong safety culture

  • Professional pilot license

Carmen-Maja Rex started her career as a consultant with Accenture in 1999, before joining the United Nations in 2003. In 2010, she started at Siemens where she held a number of leadership roles in Human Resources. In 2020, she became HR Group Director at Heidelberg Materials which employs a global workforce of 51,000 employees located in over 50 countries.
