Pilot Assessment Solution Provider Symbiotics Develops In-House Solution to Support Compliance with Indian DGCA Medical Circular
The Government of India through the regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has issued a medical circular effective from May 31st, 2023, for “mental health promotion of flight crew and Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs)”. The aim is for aviation organisations to be more aware of mental health issues within aviation and increasing mental health awareness in the form of early recognition, reporting and its management.
Symbiotics, the provider of ADAPT Pilot Psychological Assessments, has developed a solution with their in-house team of Occupational and Aviation Psychologists, that has been well-received by their Indian clients as an acceptable solution.
In addition to offering established tests such as the ADAPT Personality Questionnaire, Cognitive Reasoning, Crew Resource Management, and their multitasking workload management test, FAST, the specific recommendations of the medical circular have been directly addressed. Expanding on the ADAPT Control and Co-ordination (Ball Game) Test, the solution assesses hand-foot-eye co-ordination through the addition of a PC foot pedal flight controller.
Symbiotics can work with airlines, ATOs and related aviation organisations to support their assessment activities and compliance with Section 4.3: Psychological Assessment. Offering a modular assessment approach, Symbiotics allow you to use their solution wholly or in addition to your existing assessment processes. Symbiotics solutions are overseen and supported by their team of registered Occupational and Aviation Psychologists who are internationally recognised.
Symbiotics’ Technical Director, Richard Brecknell says “Symbiotics has a long track record of delivering psychological assessments to the aviation market and providing specific solutions compliant to EASA regulations in recent years. With the new DGCA medical circular, we are delighted that this brings similar focus to the issues of mental health and highlights the benefits of psychological assessment, and, with the support of existing airline and ATO clients in India, our products and services have been configured to provide a solution that has been well-received.”

Global Flight Training Group, Airways Aviation, Pens Article Featuring Commercial Pilot Demand in India
Airways Aviation published an article entitled “India – Commercial Pilots Needed” featuring India’s pilot training infrastructure landscape. Check it out below.
“Interested in becoming a commercial pilot? Airways Aviation can help get you there!
Here are some important things you need to know about the aviation industry in India and the various career paths available to aspiring pilots.
India’s aviation industry is experiencing rapid growth, leading to an increasing number of opportunities for well-trained pilots. To ensure the best long-term career outcome, it is essential to receive quality training from a reputable Flight Training Organization (FTO) and obtain recognized licenses. Additionally, airlines and the aviation industry at large actively seek candidates with recognized university degrees.
One notable challenge in the industry is the shortage of experienced and employable pilots in India. Despite the country breaking previous records in new aircraft orders, there is an insufficient number of pilots available to fly the thousands of aircraft expected to be delivered in the coming years. Over the next decade, approximately 18,000 new pilots will be required, averaging around 1,800 per year. Currently, the pilot training market in India domestically and abroad produces only about half the number needed.
If you’re considering a career as a commercial pilot, here are some potential career paths you could explore:
- Airline Pilot – CPL or ATPL holders: This is the most common career path for commercial pilots, involving working for commercial airlines such as IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd), Air India Limited, Vistara – TATA SIA Airlines Ltd., and many others. To become an airline pilot in India, you need to complete at least 200 hours of flying experience and pass several exams and flight tests.
- Charter Pilot: As a charter pilot, you would fly private jets or other aircraft for individual clients or companies. You can work for charter companies or even start your own business. To become a charter pilot, you will need a CPL and significant flying experience.
- Cargo Pilot: As a cargo pilot, your role would involve flying cargo planes to transport goods from one location to another. Cargo airlines such as Blue Dart Aviation or DHL Aviation (UK) Limited could potentially offer employment opportunities. To become a cargo pilot, you need a CPL and some flying experience.
- Flying Instructor: As a flying instructor, you would teach aspiring pilots how to fly. You can work for flying schools such as the Asia Pacific Flight Training Academy Limited (APFT). To become a flying instructor, you need a CPL and significant flying experience.
It’s important to note that approved foreign licenses, including Australian CASA, European EASA, or American FAA licenses, will need to be converted to the Indian DGCA-approved ICAO License.
Becoming a commercial pilot requires significant dedication and investment in terms of time, money, focus, and attention. Prospective students should conduct thorough research and gather as much information as possible before making a decision to pursue this career path. Choosing the right academy, and for those pursuing a “Double CPL & Degree Qualification,” the right university is critical. It ensures that you receive the necessary qualifications and broadens your options for both domestic and international career opportunities as a commercial pilot.
In conclusion, the aviation industry in India offers promising prospects for commercial pilots. With proper training, recognized licenses, and a passion for flying, aspiring pilots can embark on an exciting and fulfilling career in this dynamic field.
