In this week’s AFM Pilot Training Leadership Interview Series AFM’s Customer Success & Business Development Manager Agata Marszalek speaks with Tom Verbruggen – the Founder and CEO of Aviatize – all-in-one digital platform to manage all processes needed in a flight school, flying club, operator, or maintenance facility.
The conversation covers:
- Company Overview: Tom Verbruggen, CEO of Aviatize, discussed the company’s history and growth. Aviatize provides an advanced all-in-one and customizable digital platform for flight schools to manage all key processes. They initially started with drone operators in 2015 and expanded to manned aviation in 2019.
- Recent Developments: Aviatize recently partnered with LOT Polish Airlines Flight Academy as their TMS provider and established its commercial headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, to support rapid growth in the U.S. market.
- Industry Trends: Tom noted increasing demand for pilots and pilot training, particularly in Asia, driven by rising air travel and the retirement of older pilots. He highlighted a trend towards the need for operational efficiency and the use of advanced software and technologies like augmented reality in pilot training.
- Challenges for Flight Schools: Aviatize helps flight schools address the challenge of training more pilots efficiently and safely without increasing their administrative burden. It also offers tools for data-driven decision-making and improving safety through proactive measures.
- Unique Selling Points: Aviatize offers a powerful advanced all-in-one platform designed to streamline flight school operations by integrating all key processes such as training planning and follow-up, billing, maintenance planning and execution, safety, documentation management and compliance into a single smart and adaptable system. With advanced features in each module, the platform caters to the needs of both small flight schools and large academies, offering highly configurable options that adapt to each organization’s unique workflows which often is not the case with other solutions. A standout feature is the mobile companion app, which allows students and instructors to access critical information and track and replay flights. By providing data-driven insights on most of the data points that are captured by the system, Aviatize helps schools make proactive, informed decisions, improving student progress, safety, and overall performance.

Global Pilot Training Group CAE Advances Electric Conversion Kit for Piper Aircraft with Certification Criteria from Transport Canada
CAE has reached a significant milestone in its efforts to bring sustainable aviation technology to the market, with Transport Canada issuing the G-1 Issue Paper that sets the certification criteria for CAE’s electric-powered aircraft. This crucial step advances the development of CAE’s electric conversion kits for the Piper Archer aircraft, a major initiative aimed at reducing aviation’s carbon footprint.
Elisen, CAE’s Design Approval Organization (DAO), has been at the forefront of this effort, working closely with partners like Piper Aircraft, H55, and Safran Electrical & Power. Pilot and Aircraft Maintenance Training Group Spartan Education Group and US Operator Launch New Pilot Training Academy
USA – Spartan Education Group (SEG) and Atlas Air, Inc. (“Atlas”) met in the last week of September 2024, at the Atlas’ state-of-the-art Global Operations Center near the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) for a formal contract signing ceremony and an exclusive tour of the facilities. The event marked the official launch of the new pilot training partnership, the Atlas Cadet Academy.
The Academy is designed to prepare aspiring aviators for First Officer opportunities with Atlas, operator of the world’s largest fleet of 747 freighter aircraft, serving both cargo and passenger needs. This collaboration strengthens Atlas’ workforce development strategy and continued growth across its global aviation network.
Atlas Air Senior Vice President, Human Resources, Patricia Goodwin-Peters, emphasized the significance of this collaboration:
“This strategic alliance between Team Atlas and Spartan is designed to equip the next generation of pilots with the critical skills and leadership qualities needed to excel in the ever-evolving aviation industry. At Atlas, our commitment to developing future talent and communicating the value of the cargo airline industry is stronger than ever. Together, we are passionate about shaping the next wave of aviation leaders. We are excited to see the long-term impact the Atlas Cadet Academy will have on our industry, our company, and future aviation professionals.”
The signing event was attended by Directors from Atlas’ Talent Acquisition and Human Resources departments, along with SEG’s Executive Vice President of Flight Administration, Robert Werderich, and two certified flight instructors from the Atlas Cadet Academy’s first class of cadets; Nicolas Gonzales and Matthew Madaras.
Reflecting on the visit, Matthew Madaras, ACA Certified Flight Instructor CFI, shared his impression of Atlas:
“Visiting Atlas’ Global Operation Center was astonishing. Observing the coordination of flight operations, maintenance activities, and safety protocols for every single flight Atlas release for departure is impressive. The visit to Atlas’s maintenance hangar was nothing short of amazement. Seeing the Boeing 747 aircraft, receiving a thorough walk-through preflight inspection, and seeing the ins and outs of the aircraft’s system up close was an invaluable experience. Overall, the visit to both facilities was a behind-the-scenes look at how Atlas functions smoothly and safely.”
The Atlas Cadet Academy partnership agreement was signed by Daniel Bregman, SEG’s Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development, and Matthew Sturgis, Atlas’ Director of Flying & Chief Pilot.
The Academy is now enrolling cadets at Spartan’s flight training location in West Chicago, Illinois.
