International Test Pilots School Fixed Wing Students Experience Flight Test Training at CAE’s Simulation Facility
Canadian pilot training organisation International Test Pilots School (ITPS) Fixed Wing students recently experienced world-class flight test training at CAE’s Simulation Facility near Toronto International Airport. Fixed Wing Flight Test Instructors Alain Lacharité and Dave Lohse leveraged their previous experience conducting flight test activities on Boeing 777-300ER and other large, transport category aircraft to develop and validate training sessions in CAE’s Boeing 777-300ER Full-Flight Simulator.
Students gained firsthand experience with flight test techniques used to safely determine Vmu (Minimum Unstick Speed), Vmcg (Minimum Control Speed on the Ground), High-Speed Characteristics and in-flight engine shutdown and relight testing. Students were also exposed to approaches to certifying Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems (TCAS) and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems (EGPWS). The high-fidelity, full-motion simulators at CAE’s Flight Training Facility provide immersive training for our students in higher-risk flight test techniques, reinforcing the requirement for a disciplined, build-up approach in a safe environment.

CAE Provides Initial Flight Training to U.S. Air Force Rotary-Wing Pilots
CAE announced that CAE Defense & Security has been awarded the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Rotary Wing, Introductory Flight Training (IFT-R) contract to support the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The contract provides critical flight training to USAF student pilots as part of the Helicopter Training Next program.
The US$44.5M initial contract award supports the training of all initial USAF rotary-wing air, ground, and simulation training. The program extends through 2033 with a maximum value of US$110.6 million over the total contract term. The introductory training will be conducted at the CAE Dothan Training Center in Dothan, AL, which is also home to the U.S. Army Fixed-Wing Training Services program.
“This significant initial flight training program is part of CAE’s continued collaboration with the USAF to improve safety and training efficiency for the next generation of rotary wing pilots,” says Daniel Gelston, President, CAE Defense & Security. “We continue to enhance training and mission readiness for our Department of Defense (DoD) customers by leveraging the expertise of our industry partners with CAE’s decades of global training experience.”
The IFT-R training program will be implemented by CAE using a fleet of Bell 505 Jet Ranger X aircraft specifically configured for AETC’s initial USAF helicopter training. The IFT-R Ground Based Training System leverages advanced simulation and interactive media providing Next-Generation rotary wing training to future aviators.
CAE will work in collaboration with industry leaders to prepare USAF rotary-wing student pilots for their follow-on training in the Helicopter Training Next pipeline. The team includes Bell Textron, Alpha 1, and Navigator Development Group Inc. working together to support flying operations, training simulation, academics, and more.
The IFT-R program is one of several programs in which CAE is supporting rotary wing aviation in the region. The Army Advanced Helicopter Flight Training Services at Fort Novosel, AL was awarded to CAE in 2020 providing classroom, simulator, and live flying instructor support services for the CH-47 Chinook, UH-60
Black Hawk, and AH-64 Apache helicopters. In 2023, CAE was also awarded a subcontract to support the U.S. Army Flight School Training Support Services at Ft. Novosel, AL to build and deliver new full flight simulators forthe CH-47F and UH-60M platforms and implement software configurations for reconfigurable collective training devices.

German Airline Partners with Global Simulator Training Center Group to Build 8 Bay Simulator Training Center
From the turn of the year 2023/2024, Germany’s most popular holiday airline will be breaking new ground in terms of training and education activities for the cockpit and cabin together with the Avenger Flight Group (AFG). A comprehensive Aviation Training Center is being set up in Dreieich in close, partnership-based cooperation. Condor takes care of providing the cabin mockups, while AFG provides the cockpit simulators. The simulators are manufactured using the latest technology from SIM International. There is also sufficient space available for theoretical training components in the adjoining “Dreieich Plaza” office complex. Thus, in addition to the cockpit simulator and recurrent training, retraining, all service and basic training as well as management training will be offered at the new location.
Full Flight Simulators and Flight Training Devices
Up to eight full-flight flight simulators have space in the training center for cockpit training, including at least one for Airbus A320ceo/neo and Airbus A330ceo/neo. Two Flight Training Devices (FTD), i.e. special flight training devices, will also be available at the new location.
Offer for other customers from the airline industry
Other customers from the airline industry will also be able to use the infrastructure of Condor and AFG at the Dreieich site in the future. Due to the attractive location, only a few kilometers from Frankfurt Airport, this offer eliminates the need for long journeys.
“We are pleased to have an experienced partner in the field of simulator training at our side in AFG. Thanks to the close cooperation at the Dreieich site, we can offer our cockpit staff excellent training conditions,” says Christian Schmitt, COO and Accountable Manager at Condor.
“We are very grateful to Condor for this valuable opportunity to work together on the construction of the new training center in Dreieich. With AFG’s extensive experience and expertise in flight simulation, we are honored to be Condor’s trusted partner in this endeavor. The training center, equipped with state-of-the-art flight simulators from AFG and cabin mockups from Condor, will offer all crew members unparalleled training conditions. We look forward to welcoming crew members from around the world to the new training center and are committed to providing them with exceptional training experiences,” said Andrés Restrepo, Executive Vice President, Avenger Flight Group.
So far, the training, education and training measures have taken place in Kelsterbach and Neu-Isenburg, among other places. Condor expects the centralization to simplify logistical training planning and even more efficient and modern training for cockpit and cabin staff.
