Simulator Manufacturer MPS Installs Boeing 737 MAX-8200 FTD at Atlantic Flight Training Academy

Netherlands headquartered MPS has installed a Boeing 737 MAX-8200 FTD at Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA) located in Cork, Ireland. The new device sits next to the B737-800W FTD previously delivered by MPS. The FTD has been qualified by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) and is ready to be applied in AFTA’s extensive training program including Ryanair’s Mentored Program.

Erik Jennes, MPS Chief Commercial Officer said: “MPS is excited that AFTA has ordered an additional simulator from MPS reaffirming our long-standing relationship. This will be an important extension of AFTA’s training capability and capacity. We are proud to be a partner in this endeavor.”

AFTA was established in 1995 and has seen a remarkable success rate with trainees. Over 2700 pilots who started their careers at AFTA are employed by leading airlines globally including Ryanair, a Boeing 737 MAX customer, who have a long-standing partnership with AFTA. The training contract with Ryanair is called the Ryanair mentored pilot programme and pilots are trained to Ryanair specific SOPs, procedures and standards before doing their type rating with the airline. The addition of the B737 MAX 8200 from MPS compliments AFTAs ability to “raise the bar” even further and will greatly enhance the training experience for AFTA mentored cadets.

French Aviation Training Group Mermoz Academy Invests EUR 2.3 million in New Training Center

Mermoz Academy, France’s based airline pilot and cabin crew training school, has just opened a brand-new training center close to its main office, investing a significant 2.3 million euros in a facility spanning 1,300 square meters. This move aims to enhance the training experience for future pilots and cabin crew members.

The centerpiece of the new establishment is a meticulously designed aircraft fuselage with forty seats allowing trainees to practice various real-life scenarios including engine failure, depressurization, smoke incidents, cabin crew announcements, and communications from the cockpit. Additionally, an evacuation slide, tailored to medium-haul aircraft, has been seamlessly integrated into the training system.

A noteworthy feature of the training center is an entirely metal cabin that allows trainees to acquire essential skills in controlling fires within a confined and smoky environment. The cabin is surrounded by glass walls, allowing other students to observe and learn from their peers as they perform these crucial actions, all under the guidance of experienced instructors.

The mock cockpit is designed to teach cabin crew how to handle situations where a pilot falls ill mid-flight. The setup replicates both Boeing and Airbus configurations, providing practical experience for different aircraft types.

Alongside these, there are classrooms, a wide slide similar to those on long-haul planes, and a simulator for pilots to practice and qualify. The installation of an FNPTII MCC-type simulator is a significant milestone, enabling pilots to undergo MCC qualification training. A second simulator is scheduled to be operational by the summer of 2024, further expanding Mermoz Academy’s training capacity.

Serge Gourlaouen, the Director of Mermoz Academy Rungis, emphasized the strategic importance of this development, stating, “This new equipment will allow Mermoz Academy to expand the training offering provided to airlines.  Airlines need staff, pilots and cabin crew. The opening of this center comes at the right time to meet the demands of our customers. ”
