Malaysia Airlines to Acquire 20 Airbus A330neo for Widebody Fleet Renewal

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), parent company of Malaysia Airlines, has selected the A330neo for the carrier’s widebody fleet renewal programme. The initial agreements cover the acquisition of 20 A330-900 aircraft, with 10 to be purchased from Airbus and 10 to be leased from Dublin-based Avolon.

The announcement was made at an event in Kuala Lumpur, attended by MAG CEO Izham Ismail and Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International Christian Scherer, who signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the aircraft to be ordered from Airbus. The agreements with engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce and Avolon were also signed at the ceremony.

Powered by the latest Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330neo will join the carrier’s fleet of six long range A350-900s and gradually replace its 21 A330ceo aircraft. The carrier will operate the A330neo on its network covering Asia, the Pacific and the Middle East. Malaysia Airlines will configure its A330neo fleet with a premium layout seating 300 passengers in two classes.

Izham Ismail said: “The acquisition of the A330neo is a natural transition from our current A330ceo fleet. The A330neo will not only provide fleet modernisation and enhanced operational efficiency, but will also meet environmental targets through reduced fuel-burn per seat, while keeping passenger safety and comfort at its core. This is a significant milestone as MAG moves towards the successful execution of our Long-Term Business Plan 2.0 to position itself as a leading aviation services Group within the region.”

In addition to the renewal of the widebody fleet, Airbus and MAG also signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to study a wider collaboration in the areas of sustainability, training, maintenance and airspace management.

Christian Scherer said: “Malaysia Airlines is one of the great Asian carriers and we are proud and humbled to be its preferred supplier of widebody aircraft. The decision is a clear endorsement of the A330neo as the most efficient option in this size category for premium operations. It’s also the clear winner in terms of in-flight comfort and we are looking forward to working with Malaysia Airlines to define an exceptional cabin experience.”

The A330neo is the new generation version of the popular A330 widebody. Incorporating the latest generation engines, a new wing and a range of aerodynamic innovations, the aircraft offers 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2-emissions. The A330-900 is capable of flying 7,200nm / 13,300km non-stop.

The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, providing passengers with a new level of comfort, ambience and design. This includes offering more personal space, larger overhead bins, a new lighting system and the ability to offer the latest in-flight entertainment systems and full connectivity. As with all Airbus aircraft, the A330neo also features a state-of-the-art cabin air system ensuring a clean and safe environment during the flight.

As at the end of July 2022, the A330neo has received more than 270 firm orders from over 20 customers worldwide.

One of the Largest Flight Schools in South-East Asia Launches “Study Now, Pay Later” Program

Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga, Philippines – In line with AAG’s long-term and forward-looking value creation & sharing initiatives, the company continues to partner with banks and other institutions to expand its financing support facilities for aspiring pilots. On 02 August 2022, AAG sealed a tie-up with BDO for a ‘Study Now, Pay Later’ (SNPL) Program, an educational loan program in a form of a home loan designed to assist AAG’s trainees in funding their pilot training program.

Mr. Cristopher Magdangal, Regional Director for Asia Pacific and the signatory for AAG, underscored how the SNPL Program has emerged from the continued partnership between the two organizations. “The SNPL Program is a product of our growing and continuing partnership with BDO. In 2016, we worked together in bringing the first wide-body aircraft simulator in the Philippines. Now, I am delighted that this partnership is set to expand its reach. The partnership is no longer just about supporting AAG in building its assets and capabilities, but to a greater extent, it now includes helping the next generation of pilots fulfill their dreams. That, for me, is an affirmation that AAG’s partnership with BDO is a kind of partnership that truly creates value and contributes meaningfully to the bigger community and aviation industry.” “We all know that pilot training programs usually require significant amount of resources, and a lot of aspiring pilots find that a hindrance. We want to bridge that gap. We want to open more opportunities for aspiring pilots for them to be able to pursue their passion and dreams, and see them take part in the industry’s recovery. AAG is grateful and privileged to partner with BDO in carrying out this advocacy,” he added.

The ceremonial MOA signing was held at the AAG Simulator Training Center and was attended by key people from both organizations. Representing BDO were Ms. Grace Lastimosa- First Vice President and the signatory on behalf of BDO, and Ms. Cecilia Liwanag- Senior Assistant Vice President. On the other hand, AAG’s Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Mr. Cristopher Magdangal was joined by AAG’s Accountable Manager, Capt. Vicente Casibang, who also signed as one of the witnesses.

The “AAG SNPL Program in partnership with BDO” is an exclusive offer to AAG’s Airline Pilot Program (APP) and First Officer Transition (FOT) trainees. Trainees may take advantage of the flexible loan term, light payment option, and built-in insurance features of the loan program. To qualify, applicants are first required to pass the screening and assessment process of the training program they are applying for.

AAG, as an organization that sees itself as part of a bigger community and industry, is set to continue to strengthen its partnership with institutions and key industry players in developing and introducing programs and initiatives that will help aspiring pilots realize their dream, and support the aviation industry in its recovery.

Two of Philippines Leading Pilot Training Academies Sign Partnership for Simulator Training

Clark Freeport Zone, Pampanga- It won’t be long before we see the aviation industry rise up and get back on its feet once again. In a press release published by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global air passenger numbers are expected to exceed pre-pandemic levels in 2024. And if there is one critical aspect to focus on now that we navigate the path towards recovery, that is to make aviation professionals, particularly aviators, ready to support and sustain the industry’s eventual recovery.

Organizations who believe in the resiliency of the aviation industry and are ready to support the industry’s recovery understand that collaboration and leveraging on each other’s strength is the key to speeding up and sustaining its recovery. On 08 July 2022, two (2) leading ATOs in the Philippines- AAG and FAA, inked a partnership agreement for the First Officer Transition (FOT) program– a full Airbus A320 Type Rating program with MCC and JOT designed to equip CPL-IR license holders with all the required elements to qualify for a rating on an Airbus A320. The program is pioneered by AAG and is part of the organization’s flagship programmes.

We are very much delighted that FAA is teaming up with us in producing ‘airline ready’ pilots. This MOA is very timely especially now that we all anticipate the industry’s recovery. I am certain that this initiative will play a key role in enhancing and strengthening the aviation training in the country,” said Capt. Vicente Casibang, AAG’s Accountable Manager and the partnership signatory for AAG.

FAA also expressed its appreciation and excitement on the partnership. In his remarks, FAA’s Chief Operating Officer (COO)- MGen. Restituto Padilla Jr. AFP (Ret) said, “I look forward to seeing more of these- collaborations, partnerships, and alliances happening within the industry in the years to come. This is a golden opportunity to take part in the recovery of the aviation industry. Our team is excited to work hand-in-hand with the AAG team in producing the kind of pilots the industry needs during these exciting times. God willing, there will be more of these in the near future, as we move onward the path towards recovery, and as we help our pilot trainees fulfill their passion and dreams. Maraming salamat sa pagkakataon, and cheers to this partnership!” Also representing FAA were Capt. Jesus D. Madlangbayan, Accountable Manager and the signatory on behalf of FAA, and Mr. Raoul S. Perez, Consultant- PTC Holdings, Inc, who led the drafting and the finalization of the MOA.

The ceremonial MOA signing was concluded by AAG’s Regional Director for Asia Pacific, Mr. Cristopher Magdangal. In his closing speech, he thanked FAA for their confidence and trust in AAG and conveyed his optimism on the partnership between AAG and FAA. He said, “this is a very welcome development as we all move towards the recovery of the industry. As training institutions, we play an important role in triggering growth, not just on the aspect of pilot training, but in all facets of the industry. Since I started working in the aviation industry, consolidation has been one of my advocacies. And that could only happen if there is trust among organizations. So, to our partners in FAA, thank you for the trust. I am optimistic that this is just the beginning of the many more opportunities we can explore together. So, with the best that we can, let’s work together- for our organizations, for our trainees, for the bigger community, and the entire aviation industry.
