Leading Digital Aviation Educational Materials Publisher, Padpilot, Launches Helicopter Theory for PPL(H) Offering
United Kingdom based pilot training eduational material publisher, Padpilot, has released a new series of interactive theory books and training resources for Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter) theoretical knowledge studies.
The set of 9 PPL(H) subjects is available on Padpilot’s new eReader content platform, which allows the digital content to be accessed on any device: Android, Apple or browser.
The series is accompanied by resources for helicopter training providers that include editable classroom presentations that mirror the book content, learning management systems, student progress tests, and compliance & technical support.
All Padpilot’s training material is written by subject matter experts and is fully compliant with the EASA syllabi. Each PPL(H) book is designed for trainee pilots and assumes no prior knowledge. Together, the series provides a comprehensive theoretical introduction to helicopter flying and covers everything required for the successful completion of the 9 ground examinations required for a PPL(H). For pilots wanting to progress to commercial qualification, Padpilot’s ATPL(H) books follow on from where the PPL(H) course ends.
“The new PPL(H) resources are modern, interactive, and uniquely designed specifically for helicopter pilot training. Our team of Subject Matter Experts, graphic artists and editors have created interactive, engaging books that bring PPL(H) theory to life and perfectly complement our ATPL(H) materials. We’re delighted to be able to offer a complete ground school solution for helicopter pilot training,” said Nathan Gray, Head of Learning and Development, Padpilot.
Padpilot launched it’s commercial helicopter theory course in 2022 which contains only helicopter training content with relevant case studies, revision quizzes and interactive learning aids. The publisher’s in-house graphics team created thousands of new illustrations, animations and 3D models of helicopters and their component parts for the course, some of which now feature in the new PPL(H) series.
New books for a new generation
Back in 2011 Padpilot launched the first aviation theory books for the iPad. Since then, as technology has developed, they have become more sophisticated, interactive and immersive.
Padpilot’s philosophy has always been to create TK materials that assume no prior knowledge but deliver a holistic pilot education that’s entirely up to date, in a way that’s relevant to the next generation of pilots.
Knowledge and understanding of the syllabus builds incrementally through the course, with many of the more complex concepts explained visually.
The new Helicopter books contain thousands of explanatory graphics, videos, and 3D models that can be explored in VR and AR (virtual and augmented reality), help bring PPL(H) theory to life.
Padpilot PPL(H) theory titles:
- AGK 1 – Systems & Engines
- AGK 2 – Electrics & Instruments
- Air Law & Ops Procedures
- Communications
- Human Performance
- Navigation & Radio Aids
- Principles of Flight
- Flight Performance & Planning
- Meteorology
PPL(H) is the latest book series to be added to the Padpilot eReader platform. Other theory courses available are: PPL(A), ATPL(A), ATPL(H).

In March 2023 Padpilot launched a new content platform, making their best-selling theory ebooks available on any device, not just iPads, bringing interactive theoretical knowledge resources to a wider audience.

US-Based University Added New Flight Simulator in 2023 Manufactured by Flightdeck Solutions
The Aviation Institute at University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) faced a significant challenge in preparing its aviation students for successful transitions into professional pilot careers. As a partner in career pathway programs with major airlines, UNO needed a realistic training device that could familiarize students with advanced flight management systems, autopilot systems, and crew resource management training.
FDS Solution/Approach
UNO sought a practical and cost-effective solution to enhance their training program. After considering various options, they chose the Flightdeck Solutions FDS-B737NG-FTD flight training device. The device stood out for its full tactile experience, realistic controls, impressive visuals, and affordability.
Scott Vlasek, UNO Aviation Institute Program Director and key figure in the decision-making process, stated, “The FDS trainer addresses our needs very well. Every 737 pilot that has been in the device was impressed with its realism – it looks and feels like the actual aircraft.”
The decision to choose the B737NG model aligned perfectly with UNO’s partnership with Southwest Airlines Destination 225 and United Airlines Aviate Career Pathway Programs.
Outcome
The FDS B737NG device has significantly contributed to UNO’s aviation program, becoming a central marketing and educational tool. The device’s installation has attracted prospective students nationwide, enhancing the university’s enrollment objectives. Furthermore, it has provided invaluable hands-on experience to students, particularly through unique opportunities like “Fly with a Southwest Pilot” or “Fly with a United Pilot” events.
Vlasek highlighted the broader impact of the simulator, “The ability to showcase this fantastic device to various groups has brought attention to our program. It validated the decision of our funders and has helped us continue to grow and expand.”
The success of the FDS device at UNO has not only elevated the training quality but has also garnered attention from university leadership, congressional representatives, and the local aviation community. Vlasek enthusiastically recommends FDS devices to other institutions for their realism, affordability, and the value they add to aviation education. With plans to potentially expand and integrate more FDS devices in the future, UNO is set on a path of continued growth and innovation in aviation training.
