Iowa, USA – The University of Dubuque, a US university-based flight training provider, has completed a major expansion of its Edward Babka Aviation Learning Center and associated hangar facilities at Dubuque Regional Airport. The development consolidates flight training, simulation, aircraft maintenance and instructional facilities to accommodate the university's growing aviation student population.

  • The university reported nearly 500 aviation students enrolled in fall 2026, compared with 230 in 2019. According to the City of Dubuque's FY2027 airport budget documentation, the expanded facilities could eventually support approximately 700 aviation students.
  • The project added 15,000 square feet to the Aviation Learning Center, increasing the number of Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) debriefing rooms to 48 and providing additional classrooms, offices and student study areas. Flight simulators previously accommodated in separate hangars have also been relocated into the main training centre.
  • The newly completed 48,000-square-foot Hangar 106 accommodates 28 aircraft alongside maintenance operations. It is situated next to Hangar 105, which houses another six aircraft and was previously completed in 2024. The consolidated arrangement replaces an operating model in which aircraft and maintenance activities were distributed across five hangars at different airport locations.
  • The university has expanded its flight ramp by approximately 59,000 square feet, allowing its training fleet to be parked together on the apron. Vehicle parking has also increased to approximately 250 spaces, improving access between classrooms, flight dispatch, aircraft and maintenance facilities.
  • The expansion was originally scheduled for completion in December 2026, but the university confirmed the completed facilities on 5 October and held its official opening event on 7 October 2026.
  • AFM previously reported that the University of Dubuque selected an entrol Cabri G2 Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD) for installation in 2027. The planned helicopter simulator will support private, instrument, commercial and flight instructor training within the university's expanding rotary-wing program.
