Centre for Mindfulness and Malaysia’s AATA Launch Mindfulness-Based Pilot Training Program

Singapore – The Centre for Mindfulness (CFM) has partnered with Malaysian flight training organisation Asia Aeronautical Training Academy (AATA) to introduce the Calm in Command program, a mindfulness-informed pilot competency development initiative aimed at enhancing non-technical pilot skills.

  • Calm in Command integrates mindfulness training with pilot competency development to help cadet pilots improve clarity, composure, and confidence in high-pressure situations.
  • The program, developed by Albert Tiong (CMT-P) and Cyrano Latiff, focuses on enhancing situation awareness, a critical factor in aviation safety and decision-making.
  • AATA instructors will also receive training, enabling the academy to integrate competency-based training and assessment (CBTA) into its curriculum.
  • The initiative addresses a gap in flight training, where technical skills are prioritized over structured non-technical competency development.
  • Mindfulness practices in aviation can help pilots manage emotions, recognize environmental cues, and improve decision-making under pressure.
  • With Evidence-Based Training (EBT) now emphasizing core pilot competencies in airlines, Calm in Command aims to better prepare cadets for assessments and long-term success in aviation careers.
