Joby Aviation Installs First CAE Flight Simulator for FAA-Approved Air Taxi Training
California, USA – Joby Aviation, a pioneer in electric air taxi development, has taken delivery of its first flight simulator developed in partnership with CAE, marking a key step toward FAA-approved pilot training for commercial eVTOL operations. The simulator installation at Joby’s Marina, California facility will support training ahead of the company’s planned commercial launch.
-
The simulator is part of a two-device package developed by CAE and tailored to Joby’s all-electric eVTOL aircraft. The second unit—a full-motion simulator—is expected later in 2026.
-
Both simulators feature CAE’s 3000 series hardware, including a 300-by-130-degree field of view and high-fidelity visuals powered by CAE’s Prodigy Image Generator using Unreal Engine, enabling ultra-realistic urban air mobility scenarios.
-
The first device is expected to receive FAA Level 7 qualification; the second will qualify as a Level C Full Flight Simulator, supporting full pilot certification under FAA Part 135 requirements.
-
Once operational, the two simulators are expected to train up to 250 pilots per year, enabling Joby to scale its commercial air taxi operations with in-house training capabilities.
-
The project began in 2022 as a multi-year collaboration between Joby and CAE to establish a certifiable training infrastructure aligned with FAA simulator standards.
Statements
-
“These simulators are central to the FAA certification process and are being delivered on time to support pilot training ahead of Joby’s first commercial flights planned for this year. Developing flight simulators that are fully qualified by the FAA takes years of work and access to aircraft data, and it is required for Part 135 operations of eVTOL aircraft in the United States. Having started this multi-year process with CAE in 2022, Joby is progressing in developing qualified, scalable pilot training infrastructure as we near commercial operations.” – Bonny Simi, President of Operations at Joby Aviation
-
“CAE is proud to partner with Joby to bring world-class simulation technology to the emerging eVTOL market. These simulators set a new benchmark for training infrastructure in urban air mobility. By leveraging decades of expertise in high-fidelity simulation, we are helping Joby prepare pilots for safe, efficient operations and supporting the industry’s transition to sustainable air transportation.” – Alexandre Prévost, President of Civil Aviation at CAE
