US Airport Reports Increase of Passenger Numbers but Worries Possible Decline of Flights Due to Pilot Shortage

Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport in Louisiana, United States, reports that its passenger numbers continue to recover but worries possible decline in Flights due to the worsening pilot shortage. The airport is seeing that come September, capacity will equal pre-pandemic levels but might get halted if airlines could not hire enough pilots. The current seating capacity of the airport is at 82% of the 2019’s capacity.

According to Jim Caldwell, Marketing, Public Relations and Air Service Development Manager at Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, while airline officials have stipulated they can justify reinstatement since the airport is profitable, airlines are also facing huge constraints when it comes to staff shortage, especially that of pilot shortage that have forced airlines to reduce flights.

US State Legislators Block Proposal of Closing the Military Pilot Training Center

The Biden Administration plans, as indicated in the proposed fiscal budget for 2023, to close the Air National Guard pilot training center in Georgia to which the bipartisan Georgia legislators blocked by requesting the Congress to reject the proposal.

The proposed fiscal budget will eliminate funding to the Air Dominance Center at the Savannah Air National Guard Base, which conducts Air-to-Air Combat Training Missions for 4th and 5th generation fighters for the Air National Guard, active duty Air Force and the Navy and Marine Corps.

“As members of Congress, we recognize that budgets have limits and hard decisions must be made to protect our country’s bottom line. But our military’s capacity to conduct realistic, live training sets us apart from our adversaries. We can see from Russia’s tactical incompetency in Ukraine how disastrous it can be if a nation does not properly prepare its warfighters. That is exactly why the Savannah CRTC must remain open,” said five Congressmen led by Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock thru a letter to the House Committee that oversees budget matters.

Airlines UK Chief: Airline Sector has a Serious Problem with Recruitment

Airlines UK (Trade Union of Airlines in the United Kingdom) Chief, Tim Alderslade, during a panel debate at Advantage Travel Partnership’s conference in Madeira, said that the airline sector has ‘serious problem’ trying to recruit more staff. Alderslade says that labor is a big issue as UK airlines tries to cope with the increasing demand.

“There’s a huge number of challenges and labour will be a real issue moving forward, and not just in the short term. It’s going to be a difficult few months as the labour just isn’t there, and it will take a number of years to get back to where we were,” said Alderslade.

Alderslade emphasized, referring to the recruitment aspect, that it’s going to be a “really difficult few years ahead” if the sector doesn’t get it right.

“There’s a big conversation going on at the moment with government on how we can get people who want to come into the industry quicker,” added Alderslade.
